Bali Macro Photography Workshop — Alam Batu Beach Bungalow Resort
Bali offers some of the richest macro and muck diving on the planet, and this ten-day workshop is built to help you photograph it at your very best. Join instructor Todd Winner at the beautiful Alam Batu Beach Bungalow Resort for a trip that pairs world-class critter diving with hands-on, personalized photo instruction.
The Resort
Nestled in the shadow of Mount Agung, Alam Batu Beach Bungalow Resort is a stunning slice of Indonesian paradise — and the go-to base for underwater shooters chasing Bali's staggering diversity of marine critters.
While dive resorts within Tulamben itself are limited to shore diving, Alam Batu sits just to the west, in the village of Kubu, which gives it a real edge. Its large, fast dive boats reach all of Tulamben's famous sites, plus a host of others that shore divers simply can't access. Pair that with a professional dive operation and dual dedicated camera rooms, and you have a setup that impresses even the most seasoned underwater photographers.
Of course, Bali isn't only about diving, which is why every package includes unlimited spa treatments and cultural tours. Dive in the morning and unwind at the spa in the afternoon, or tour the island before an afternoon dive — the choice is entirely yours. Join us at our favorite resort in Bali and take your macro imaging to the next level.

Diving in Bali
There's a reason Bali draws divers and underwater photographers of every experience level, year after year: an incredible diversity of marine life paired with an equally wide variety of diving.
The island's volcanic coastline is renowned for world-class muck and critter diving, where black-sand slopes and rubble beds shelter some of the Indo-Pacific's most coveted species. Bucket-list subjects like frogfish, wonderpus, ornate ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp, and a dazzling variety of nudibranchs (to name just a few) are all on the table, turning every dive into a hunt for your next standout image. Alam Batu's wonderful guides are expert at finding these critters, freeing you up to just focus on your photography!
Bali is also home to the USAT Liberty, one of the most frequently dived shipwrecks in the world and every bit as rewarding as it is accessible. Schools of fish patrol the wreck, frogfish tuck into its sponge-covered structure, and mimic octopuses roam the surrounding black sand, creating endless photographic opportunities.
We've scheduled the workshop during Bali's dry season, when cooler water temperatures often bring an even greater abundance of critters. This time of year also delivers more stable weather and improved visibility, providing ideal conditions for underwater photography.

The Workshop
Our Bali workshop is designed to elevate your underwater macro photography through a blend of expert instruction, hands-on assistance, and personalized coaching. Whether you're new to macro or refining an established eye, we'll cover the techniques that help you make the best possible images of the remarkable critters you'll encounter. Our goal is to send you home with a portfolio you're proud of, along with the knowledge and confidence to keep improving long after the workshop ends.
Each day includes classroom presentations, image reviews, and one-on-one instruction tailored to your individual goals and experience level. We'll dig into exposure, strobe positioning and lighting, composition, autofocus and focus modes, and creative techniques that make your images stand out. By combining daily shooting opportunities with constructive feedback and in-depth instruction, you'll build both the technical skills and the creative vision to take your macro photography to the next level.
