Constant F2.8 max aperture

Constant F2.8 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field regardless of the focal range you choose to zoom to. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.

Previously unattainable surface precision

Built with three aspherical elements including a newly developed and essential ingredient for astonishing resolution - is a new XA (extreme aspherical) lens element with better that 0.01-micron surface precision. The extremely precise XA element reduces aberration and delivers the ultimate resolution throughout the entire zoom range and aperture range, as well as from corner to corner of all image files.

11-blade circular aperture for luscious bokeh

When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing, polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Fast AF optimized for stills and video

Two heavy focus groups are rapidly and precisely positioned by separate actuators: a powerful ring SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) actuator for the front group, and a double linear motor actuator for the rear group. Improved positioning precision works with real-time feedback from multiple position sensors to allow the body's AF system to operate at full capacity.

Operation and reliability optimized for fieldwork

Rigid construction with constant lens length during focusing and zooming contributes to excellent handling in the widest range of shooting situations. Focus hold buttons can hold the focus point even during continuous AF operation, and a focus range limiter switch can be used to preset a focusing distance range for maximum AF speed.

Removable rotating tripod mount

This versatile lens tripod mount allows the camera to be quickly removed from the tripod in shooting situations that require a rapid handheld response.
