April 1, 2017 thru April 8, 2017

The Reef Photo & Video 2017 Anilao, Philippines Workshop

A Hands-On Workshop with the Professionals at Reef Photo & Video

and Chris Parsons

This is a chance to learn and develop with professional instruction, unlimited support and a chance to be guided to striking imaging opportunities – every day.

The diversity of underwater imaging opportunities in Anilao is unparalleled, offering incredible wide-angle shooting, as well as abundant macro life.

The Location:

Anilao, Philippines is a quiet coastal region of the island of Luzon sprinkled with small dive resorts and vacation homes.  It first gained international attention when underwater photographer Scott “Gutsy” Tuason’s book titled “Anilao”, which he co-authored with Eduardo Co-Unjieng, won the grand prize at the World Festival Underwater Images France over a dozen years ago.

More importantly; Anilao is home to some of the finest Muck and Reef Macro diving in the World.  The variety of species and environments that can be found within a 15 minute boat ride from the resort is simply staggering.  There are also world class wide angle opportunities for those who can pull themselves away from the small stuff.  It is not uncommon to hear first time visitors to the area exclaim they have photographed more unusual critters around Anilao a week, than years of international travel elsewhere.  The exotic night diving options are second to none.

The Resort:

Aiyanar is one of Anilao’s newest and most beautiful resorts.  The setting is serene - an artistically modern design carved into the hillside with mature tropical trees, lots of natural materials, an infinity pool and lovely elevated al fresco dining area to catch the ocean breeze.

Modern and well-appointed, with local charm, Aiyanar truly sets the standard for quality dive accommodation in Anilao.

The rooms are all elegant, contemporary, and larger, than typical for Filipino resorts.

Dive shop
Reef Photo and Video has reserved nearly the entire resort, so we will have full access to the extensive dive and photo support facilities (probably the best in the area).

Dining and lectures

There is little in the way of night life or nice restaurants in the region, so all meals and snacks are included and everyone will enjoy abundant dining throughout the day. Reliable Wi-Fi is available everywhere on the property.

Banka boats
Diving will be mainly from traditional Banka boats (outriggers) which we find to be one of the most comfortable dive boat set-ups ever designed and the colorful craft make great photo ops too!

Getting the most from Anilao requires expert local guides who know where the current action is happening and how to spot it.  Reef Photo and Video has already reserved eight of the most famous Anilao guides for this week; offering an amazing one guide per every three to four photographers on the trip.  This ratio will give everyone plenty of extraordinary photo opportunities during the course and groups will be divided to keep the sites less crowded.

Boats:

  • After breakfast and the morning's inspirational presentation to set you off on the right fin, we'll start the day's diving with either a one- or two-tank boat trip (depending upon the distance to the dive site).
  • Our divers will be grouped by boats, with 5-6 divers per boat.
  • The Banka boats will be loaded from shore by your dive staff.  Entry and exit is made very easy via staircase-like ladders.
  • These boats are long and spacious, and incredibly stable due to their outrigger design.
  • Each boat will depart for a different dive site, keeping the number of divers per site low, allowing maximum access to the site's features and marine life.

Exposure Suit Recommendations:

  • Temperatures are likely to range from about 75-80˚ F(24-27˚ C).
  • Most find a 5mm wetsuit comfortable, plus an 3mm hooded vest for layering, but of course, adjust accordingly to your preferred level of warmth while diving.
  • To err on the cautious side, open-heel fins with booties would be the most conservative option, given that the shoreline can be slightly pebbly, but many people do still wear full-foot fins.

In-Water Conditions:

  • Boats will either anchor, tie up to a mooring, or live-drift.
  • Current is generally mild to non-existent.  Some sites near the outer islands may experience stronger currents, feeding the reefs for spectacular wide angle opportunities.
  • Conditions are generally very easy, with more advanced dives available.
