Holy White Balance Batman! LMI Ships Bluefin for Canon S10/S100
2009-06-19 by

Light and Motion has stepped off of the Sony reservation and built a new Bluefin housing around the Canon HF S10 (and its sibling the HF S100). The new Bluefin 'C' is packed with features never seen before like manual white balance, exposure and manual focus, all from the wireless fingertip control handles.

The Canon S-10 is an exciting camcorder with a large sensor that takes great video even in low light. This is the first time Light and Motion has ventured beyond the Sony line of camcorders but they couldn't pass up the Canon S10. Camcorderinfo.com says this:

'Canon has certainly made some improvements this year with the HF S10: a new lens and sensor that produce incredibly sharp videos and photos, a new processor that allows for simultaneous photo recording and less noise, and an excellent new custom control dial that offers smooth and precise focus adjustment.'

Think small... very, very small
2009-03-26 by

The amazing Inon S-2000 is here and it is a hit!

Inon took their tried and true S-TTL technology, tuned it up and wrapped it in a tiny, yet powerful package measuring only 2.5 x 2.3 x 4.2 inches, weighing less than 11oz. that will have travelling divers rejoicing.

Inon S-2000 compared to the Inon D-2000

Inon D-2000 compared to the new Inon S-2000

For the S-2000, Inon engineers developed an ultra sensitive slave sensor with 100 times more sensitivity and a fourfold range compared to the D-2000. Like the D-2000, the S-2000 is rated at GN 20 (ISO 100m) and boasts a 1.5 sec. recycle time. A directional window cap is included for truly wireless operation, or existing Inon fiber optic cables can be used for the ultimate in reliability and accuracy.

In addition to S-TTL automatic strobe control (plus EV control for fine tuning exposures), the S-2000 offers 12-step manual control. It is powered by AA batteries, available virtually anywhere.

Seatool's Upcoming Sony UX1/SR1 High Definition Camcorders
2006-10-09 by

Seatool has announced a cool new housing supporting the Sony HDR-SR1 and HDR-UX1 Camcorders, clearly based on the Seatool HC3 Housing. These are exciting new high definition options, allowing 1080i AVCHD Format to be recorded to hard disks, and dvd. While this format is in its infancy, it has the potential to become the standard for consumer camcorders. At this point, I'm still recommending the better supported HDV format (Sony FX1/Z1u, HC1/A1u, HC3), but this may change as editing software begins to support the new AVCHD format. A ship date, pricing, final features list is not available at this time, but I expect it to be similar in price to the Seatool HC3, and available in late November.

Sony HC3 Housings
2006-08-21 by

The HC3 is an incredible addition to the Sony camcorder legacy. This palm sized 1080i HDV Camcorder has excellent low light performance, a very useful built in macro mode, and a Single CMOS RGB sensor that renders beautiful rich color. The HC3 camcorder captures 4mp still images, a very usable resolution for vacation snapshots eliminating the need to lug around 2 cameras. This camera further redefines affordable HDV, w/ a $1200 street price. It is time to get onboard the HDV Revolution! Seatool produced the first housing we were able to get our hands on for this camcorder, and it is an excellent offering. This is the smallest HDV housing ever produced, and its feature set is impressive. Combining manual & electronic controls, Record, Zoom (variable speed), AF On/Off, Still Photo, Mode, and Flash Mode are accessible from the electronic grip. Several mechanical controls are offered, including the camera's "manual" button and scroll wheel, Easy Mode, Display Mode, and Backlight. The "manual" button allows access to White Balance Shift, Manual Focus, Brightness, and EV Shift for dialing in the perfect focus & exposure. The control is easy to operate with your left thumb & forefinger. The housing utilizes a flip out mirror & lcd reversing circuit, allowing the user to take advantage of the camera's 3" LCD Screen for composition. This method offers substantial savings to competing manufacturers housed lcd monitors. Bayonet wet-mount lenses from Inon can be added underwater, letting the videographer switch from semi-fisheye, to wide angle, to macro on the same dive. Fisheye's HG-20dx is a compact, yet powerful video light with a perfectly smooth beam eliminating hotspots.

Throw in a dose of Inon super multimode electronics and the ability to use AA batteries and this one looks like a winner!

Ikelite D200 Housing Specs & Pictures Online
2006-02-11 by

Once again burning the midnight oil, Ike has just emailed me photos & information about their new D200 offering. As expected, the latest installation in their popular SLR DC housing looks to be very well done. The physical size of this camera eliminated the possibility of Ikelite's Strobe Control Panel on the back of the housing, which allows Flash EV Compensation & Manual Power Settings to be defined from the shooters left thumb on the D70 and D50 housings. This housing does, however, offer I-TTL conversion circuitry, and access to the D200's flash exposure compensation control for fine tuning exposure. A pushbutton allows the I-TTL circuit to be turned off for manual strobe control (output set on the strobehead). This housing will be an excellent match with the DS-200, DS-125, and DS-80 Flashes that have multiple manual power settings on the strobehead. Strobes from Sea & Sea, Inon, etc can also be used, but are not compatible with the I-TTL circuit. Both memory cards and camera batteries can be changed without removing the camera from the tray. All ports from previous SLR systems can be used with this housing, as well as the new 8in. Dome Port. Shutter Release, AE/AF-Lock, and the Front Command Dial are accessed from the Right Handle. The AF-On control is not accessible from the handle, which is disappointing for me as I use the control frequently when shooting wide angle. The Metering Selector is also not available, but this isn't an issue for me since I use the spot meter exclusively. Nikon has allowed the 2 metering modes not selected to be accessed via the custom button, if needed temporarily, making this even less of an issue. A 'Stay-Depressed' control operates White Balance, ISO, and Quality functions, eliminating what would be an otherwise complicated walk & chew gum maneuver with a less intelligently designed control. Availability is stated at March, and a few prototypes are being dispatched for initial field testing immediately. Feedback from prototype testers may influence some of the information written here. I can't wait to get my hands on a production unit for a little more thorough evaluation, but my initial opinion is that Ikelite has done very well with the most anticipated underwater camera yet. I'm also anxious to get in the water with this housing, my trusty 10.5, and a couple of DS-200 TTL Flamethrowers to put the system through its paces.

Say hello to my little friends...

Ikelite 8 Inch Dome Ports Are On The Way!
2006-01-24 by

The highly demanded, much anticipated Ikelite 8" Dome Ports are finally on the way to our store. While we have a number of preorders for this dome, it looks like we'll have a few ports in stock after our initial allotment. The port comes in three flavors:
  • 5510.81 for Wide Angle Zoom Lenses like the Nikon 12-24mm DX and Canon EF-S 10-22. We also expect this to be the port of choice for Canon 5d Shooters in Ikelite Housings w/ the 17-40L and 16-35L Lenses.
  • 5510.82 for Super-Wide Fisheye Lenses Like the Nikon 10.5mm DX Fisheye, Canon EF 15mm Fisheye, and Sigma 15mm Fisheye Lens.
  • 5510.83 for really long zoom lenses, we haven't been able to test compatibility on this one yet, and aren't quite sure what this extension will be appropriate for.
Initially we are only accepting phone orders for these items, but will have them listed in our cart soon. Nexus has long been considered Japan's highest quality housing builder, and we are very pleased to be able to offer their products in the United States. Nexus housings are extremely well built, featuring corrosion free cast aluminum bodies, and sealed control glands. Key controls are routed so they can easily be reached from the housing handles. Alignment issues with these housings are extremely rare, a testament to Nexus' very exacting quality control standards. Stop by the store, or Booth #206 at the Florida Dive Show to see these outstanding housings for yourself!
